With heavily modified cars there are a lot of examples where you think "For all that money that went into it, why not start with a nice car in the first place?". People who spend insane amounts of money to polish turds. They usually say something along the lines of "Yeah, but at least I didn't spend it on booze and blow!", or the wife says "At least I know where he is all night." which is laudable at first sight, but becomes questionable when they start gold plating 55hp VW Lupo engines.
This car almost belongs into this category. Why almost? Well, because I somehow like it. I grew up among those things, my family even had a Trabant wagon for some time. And this little thing also reminds me of those happy corgis that you guys post all day. It doesn't want to be taken too seriously!
While it may still be a polished something or other, it probably is one of the most sophisticated Trabant 601s on this planet and this has to account for something, right? Unfortunately no engine stuff get's mentioned, but I suspect it's got at least the VW-sourced 4-stroke.

I don't hate that. But then again, I have a thing for small cars.....

It's kinda cool. I'm not exactly sure what the "purpose" of the vehicle is, but it's interesting. I don't know what the engine is, but it's boosted and sounds healthyish.
As far as the "spending money on something better" concept, that all depends on how much money was spent and what the goal was.

cheap communist car or not, that thing is BAD ASS! I dig the actual bi-xenon projector retrofit to. This has to be the nicest trabant in the world.

Whenever I hear "For all that money that went into it, why not start with a nice car in the first place?" I pretty much switch off. The people I've come across that have said that to me just don't get that that's not the point.
The point is that I can polish a turd to the point that it can keep up with something that was shiny out of the showroom. Also, it was me that did the polishing.
I must admit, some things make me question why on earth someone has chosen that particular car to throw their time, money and ingenuity at. I also question the tastefulness of some modifications, but I'd never suggest that someone should have started with something else.
Edit: After watching the video I understand what you're getting at. I don't quite get why someone would throw so many modern touches at something like a Trabant. Looks a bit odd and out of place. Maybe that's more the style of cosmetic modification.
